UN Refugee Agency holds second annual Iftar in support of refugees

A special Iftar was held this past Friday, 17 July at the United Nations Refugee Agency headquarters in Pretoria as part of the agency’s global Ramadan campaign to highlight the millions of refugees that have been displaced from their homes.

The event, progressed by Blu Blood, was attended by key Islamic diplomatic ambassadors from around the globe, distinguished members from the South African Muslim community and media, delegates from the UNHCR and the UNHCR goodwill ambassador for South Africa and special guest speaker, Leanne Manas.

An Iftaar is the breaking of fast at sunset for Muslims during Ramadan. The overall message of the evening was to encourage peace and equality during this holy month. Despite people’s irrespective nationalities and religion, the event was about community and representing humanity.

On behalf of Blu Blood, it is a privilege and honour to host the second ambassadors’ Iftar to highlight the plight of refugees across the world. In this world today, it takes each person to step forward and stand up for the rights and betterment of our fellow men, women and especially children. To have representatives from around the world sharing in a meal together and raising much-needed funds signifies our stand for those that have been displaced,” commented Blu Blood CEO and the evening’s MC, Shaaista Khan Osman.

Ramadan is traditionally a time for reflection and gathering among Muslim families and communities, as well as acts of solidarity and generosity. During this holy month, the UNHCR is doubling its efforts to support the overwhelming number of families who have been torn apart through war and violence, leaving thousands of mothers struggling to provide for their families alone and many children without the love and care of their parents.

The UNHCR is raising funds to provide families with vital support such as shelter, food, clean water and monthly cash assistance in their time of greatest need and donations will help keep families together and protect children from potential child labour, exploitation and early marriage.
